Journeys of Faithfulness Review

Devotional books for teen girls are plentiful in book stores across the country – a blessing that many folks appreciate more and more in today’s world. However, finding just the right book that clicks with your teen can be a challenge. The angle, the language, the author’s voice, the theology, and other elements play an essential part in the appeal and effectiveness of such books. Some devotionals come across as too juvenile, irrelevant, or preachy. It is a double gift to find one that stikes the cords of your teen’s heart.

Apologia Educational Ministries publishes Journeys of Faithfulness by Sarah Clarkson. As I’ve said before, this household has never met an Apologia product they haven’t liked, and Journey’s of Faithfulness is rapidly becoming a lifelong treasure in my two teen girls’ lives. It is a devotional chapter book written for teen girls ages 12 and up.

Clarkson has divided Journeys of Faithfulness into 4 parts based on the lives of Mary and Martha, Mary the mother of Jesus, Esther, and Ruth. There are 12 chapters total, and each section is divided into three chapters that include engaging, descriptive retellings of certain days in the lives of these Biblical women. Clarkson follows each snippet in their lives with a devotional commentary where she shares a personal story about how the principles playing out in the Biblical story applied to her life at one time or another. A brief Bible study with verses to read and thoughtful questions to ponder wraps up the chapter.

My girls, 13 year old Fashionista and 16 year old NerdGirl, have each been reading the book independently during their private times with the Lord. They both genuinely enjoy the book. Fashionista is still reading through it, and it is rapidly becoming a precious treasure between her and the Lord. If you have ever read my previous post about Fashionista’s reading journey, you will understand that this continued development has my mother’s heart filled to overflowing!

From Fashionista’s heart:

I don’t know what it is, but this book is so different than other devotional books that I’ve tried to read. It’s not dry and preachy from adult to kid. It’s from someone like me, a girl, someone close to my age.

I mean, I have always known that Jesus is with me, but the chapter about Martha and Mary has really touched me. The author describes things in such a way that I feel like Jesus is talking to me. I am understanding that He really is there, always willing to talk with me and take care of me.

I also really like the way that Sarah shares her experiences. It is nice to know that someone else feels the same way I do, and that I’m not the only one.

From NerdGirl’s heart:

Since I write so many stories myself, I am always very fussy about other authors’ writing styles when they bring their characters to life. These characters in Journeys of Faithfulness, based on real people, are very well-developed and realistic. That helped draw me into the story and open my heart and imagination to what the Holy Spirit might be telling me.

I was most struck by the story of Ruth and Boaz. It wasn’t written like just another love story. Ruth had great character, and Boaz was a true Godly example who saw deeper into Ruth, beyond her physical appearance. Her physical appearance wasn’t even the issue at all! The author showed so well how compassionate he was toward Ruth’s situation, respecting her values and devotion to her mother-in-law. He watched the way she interacted with the other workers. Her character impressed him. That was a new aspect to this story that I found very refreshing and encouraging to read.

Overall, the girls agree that Journeys of Faithfulness is an excellent devotional for girls ages 12 and up. It is not superficial about outward behavior, but digs deeper into a girl’s heart attitude and her understanding of her relationship with the Lord. It is engaging and relevant.

The soft covered Journeys of Faithfulness sells for $13 and can be ordered directly from Apologia. It makes a wonderful private devotional, but would also make a precious mother/daughter bible study, or even a valuable text for an intimate, teen small group. The book would definitely be an excellent choice for a Christmas, birthday, or graduation gift for a young lady in your life.
