Notable Novelists Review

As a writing teacher as well as a homeschooling mother, I have a passion for unique and entertaining products that celebrate literature. I happen to be blessed with a sixteen year old NerdGirl who is a chip off the old block. We were tickled pink when the SchoolHouse Review Crew received the opportunity to review the Notable Novelists card game.

Notable Novelists highlights 18 of the greatest writers of the 20th century. The deck includes 3 cards for each author – author card, bio card, and library card. The goal of the game is to collect as many author sets as you can. The game is similar to Go Fish, but with a thick dose of strategy involved. When you have a number of players gathered, deducing who has which card will thrill any strategist with a competitive streak.

To start, NerdGirl and I played a couple hands together. We enjoyed the amusing caricatures and succinct highlights for each author although they aren’t integral to the game.

Later on, we challenged the 19 year old RockStar and his friend to a game. Needless to say, NerdGirl beat the pants off the rest of us. As a lover of all things literary and academic, she was the most enthusiastic of the bunch. I love the game just because I am a compulsive collector of such things. The RockStar and his friend weren’t so keen on the game, probably because they lost ;-) , but we enjoyed the opportunity to spend time together doing something fun.

The game would be a great curriculum addition for days when a family would like to lighten their schedule or when needing something to fill the time while waiting in the doctor’s office, and so on. NerdGirl loves the game because she has an insatiable affection for Go Fish. She also loves to out-strategize her big brother whenever possible.

Notable Novelists is available for $10.95 plus $4.95 shipping. It would make a fantastic back to school gift or Christmas stocking stuffer for the bibliophile, literature teacher, librarian, or game lover in your life.
